Chapter 2

I realize that I am running the risk of my male comrades viewing me as a traitor to the sacred code of manhood. This code goes back to the caveman days and hasn't changed much since. As young boys, we are instructed to never reveal the inner workings of who we are as men or why we do the things we do. Sometimes it's told through direct conversations, other times it is learned by how we see our fathers, uncles, and older brothers interact with women. My older brother was the one who guided me on how to preserve the code. I remember him giving me a severe tongue lashing about code etiquette when he found out I had crossed the line. I was around 11-years-old at the time, and his girlfriend Trina told him I was the one who told her about his other girlfriends. Let me explain to you how I was introduced to the code, and give you a first hand account of how this rite of passage happens for some of us. I never understood why Trina would make it her business to get me alone and away from my brother to ask me questions like "Are there any other girls coming over to see your brother?" or "Does he get phone calls from anyone else besides me?" I would do my best to answer her questions honestly, unaware that I was only being pumped for information. Women learn how to be detectives early in life, so it is hard for them to stop the investigations and general mistrust of men as they get older. I was just a kid, so how was I to know being honest would cause a problem?...."
