Chapter 3

After that episode with my brother and the code, I began to view the truth as being unpleasant, and the cause of divorce, arguments, and in many cases, total chaos. Lying on the other hand, did not cause arguments, and made everyone seem happy and content. It was my early belief that the truth caused my mother and father to get divorced. I remember a specific night when my father returned home a little later than his usual time, and my mother began to question him about where he had been. She never said what she thought directly; it was more of her asking questions and not giving him the time to answer before she answered them herself. For a month or so, things around the house were quiet and life seemed to go on as normal. One night my parents were in their room, and I heard my mom say something to my dad along the lines of "If you would just be honest, I will not get upset, I just want to know the truth." Well whatever he told her must have been something big because she immediately kicked him out of the house. I never knew exactly what he told her. I just knew that when he opened up and told her the truth, he was out. As I saw him driving down the street and fading away into the night, I secretly wished that he had never told her the truth. I thought if he had kept whatever it was to himself, our family would have still been together. For my own safety and security within our home, I knew I would never fall for the "truth trick" if my mother ever tried to use it on me. I was too young to be kicked out and I really liked my room, so I was going to make sure I was staying! Sometimes women are more comfortable with the lies men tell because they can then create their own version of the truth. They can live with one version or at least tolerate it until the time comes for a new and improved version of the story. I know you've been in situations where a friend of yours was having relationship issues, but no matter what you or anyone else tried to tell her she would make up excuses about the situation. At some point in your life, you may have been that girlfriend, and no one could get through to you. It's hard to properly evaluate a situation when you are caught up in the midst of it. You probably tossed caution to the wind and hoped for the best.
